Treasure Hunting - Part Two

Treasure hunting begins at home. People regularly find famous old books and valuable antiques in their attics, so get up there and look. One couple opened their walls while remodeling, and found them insulated with thousands of old and valuable movie posters. In the thirties a theater owner ahd put them there. The couple sold $200,000 worth of the posters, the last I heard.

There are many more ways to go treasure hunting. I used to take the old telegraph pole insulators form along train tracks, to sell for $4 each at an antique store. They were otherwise being shot to pieces by hunters over the years. The colored glass ones are usually the more valuable ones.

Panning For Gold

For $10 you can buy a gold pan, and start prospecting. It's easier to see the gold in the green plastic ones. Most federal lands are open to prospectors without a permit. I've only seen gold in my pan in Canada (there isn't much gold in Michigan), but people have better luck in the mountain streams of the southeast and southwest. It's a nice way to spend an afternoon in any case.

Treasure Hunting With A metal detector

metal detectors start under $200. I've found a few hundred coins, but none of them have been valuable ones. When the city tore up old sidewalks, a woman in our town used her detector to find coins . She sold one to a local coin shop for $700. A friend tells me that her husband and her have found many pieces of gold jewelry at the beach with their detector. It's also common to use metal detectors to find gold nuggets in the southwest.

Treasure Hunting In The Streets

Collecting cans for 37 cents a pound is a tough way to make a living. Here in Michigan and other states, however, there's a 10 cent deposit on every beverage container. During festivals I see people with bags of hundreds of cans they collected in the parks and garbage containers. Some travel here every year during the Cherry Festival, just to collect returnable bottles and cans that week.

I spoke to a man who went to the big concerts to collect beer and pop cans in the parking areas. He said he makes over $100 in a few hours (plus the time to take them to the store). Collecting "returnables" can be an unpleasant way to make money, but an old guy in town here tells me he pays the rent doing this.

Treasure hunting is about having the right frame of mind. There are treasures to be found everywhere. I once found a chest with foreign notes and coins in the crawl space under our house. Hotel owners report that visitors tuck money in the bedside bible, and forget to take it with them. Sometimes you just have to look.

Steve Gillman has been studying every aspect of money for thirty years. You can find more treasure hunting ideas, and more interesting and useful information on his website; http://www.UnusualWaysToMakeMoney.com

Fourteen Simple Things You Can Do To Reduce Your Risk for Breast Cancer

1. Increase your consumption of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.

2. Avoid using any pesticides or chemical sprays in your home. Try to avoid new carpet.

3. Avoid drinking tap water.

4. Decrease alcohol consumption.

5. Start an exercise program.

6. Increase consumption of organic whole grains and fiber.

7. Decrease meat, poultry and fish consumption.

8. Stop smoking.

9. Increase consumption of phytoestrogens from organic sources.

10. Decrease or stop consumption of processed foods.

11. Avoid trans-fatty acids found in margarine and some vegetable shortenings.

12. Take two capsules of organic flaxseed oil daily or just add a teaspoon of flaxseed oil to your daily organic salad.

13. If you are pregnant definitely breast feed.

14. Gets lots of sunshine as breast cancer is less prevalent in areas where there is ample sunlight unobscured by fog or smog.

Discussion:

As a retired diagnostic radiologist who read way too many mammograms I am excited because I finally have a path to try to connect to so many women who are having and have had mammograms.I was always chagrined since we would really torture and radiate many breasts but it was as if these breasts were not connected to a human type person. It bothered me that so many mammography programs make no effort at all to educate their clientele about what "they can do" to reduce their risks of breast cancer. I would suggest to the directors of these programs that we try to educate the patients and their response was 100% predictable. They would always first deny the relationship between diet and breast cancer and then add that their patients would not listen anyway.

Increasing your consumption of fresh organic fruits and vegetables has been shown to reduce the risk for breast cancer.

"There is strong evidence from epidemiologic studies that eating more fruits and vegetables decreases a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. This conclusion is strengthened by the similar results obtained from animal studies and experiments using isolated breast cells." Quoted from the Cornell University Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors. They go on to recommend uncooked fruits and vegetables. The reason for this is the heating damages some of the beneficial nutrients in the fruits and vegetables. Carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli and spinach top the list for being most protective. The Cornell study however does not stress the fact that these need to be "organic." Non-organic commercial fruits and vegetables besides being largely nutritionally bereft are also heavily sprayed with a wide variety of toxins.

The relationship between pesticides and other toxic chemicals such as benzene and toluene and cancer has long been established. There are better ways to rid your house of undesired guests than using chemical sprays. It sounds difficult but even if you can't get rid of all your pests you will live a longer and healthier life if you refrain from spraying. New carpet is another source of extremely toxic chemicals that "off gas" for at least a year or so after it is installed. Try to avoid new carpet especially in children's rooms.

Avoid tap water unless you live either in Lake Tahoe or Ithaca, New York. The tap water here in Tucson is CAP water that travels in an open trough from the Colorado River. It is loaded with fungicides / herbicides not to mention all the chlorine added once it gets here. While bottled or filtered water may not be perfect, you will considerably reduce your risk for any cancer by avoiding most tap water.

There is a little debate about the link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer. However, the consumption of any simple sugars such as occur in most alcoholic beverages is associated with decreased T-cell mobility and thus some immune compromise. I still have an occasional beer but that is the only sugar I ingest. The general consensus however, is that it is best to reduce alcoholic beverage consumption as much as possible.

Exercise has been proven in multiple studies to enhance the immune system. In order to be beneficial I would recommend thirty minutes at least three times a week. This should be exercise that elevates the heart rate and keeps it there for the thirty minutes. Running is good if you are not biomechanically impaired. Cycling and swimming are also good alternative and or exercise machines.

Increased consumption of organic grains and fiber has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Decrease your meat, fish, poultry and dairy consumption. Animal protein has been linked to all the big three killers in this country as well as osteoporosis. For more on this see the "China Study" by T. Colin Campbell and "Diet for a New America" by John Robbins. Stop smoking is really a "no brainer" here. Smoking is associatedwith a variety of cancers and there is now strong evidence that cancer of the breast is one of them.

Consume more phytoestrogens from soy products like tofu. "Women with diets rich in phytoestrogens also excrete more estrogens into their urine, and have lower blood estrogen levels. Some studies have shown that women with a diet rich in phytoestrogens have longer, and hence fewer, menstrual cycles. All of these factors may contribute to reduced breast cancer risk. " This quote from the Cornell University Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors. Please be sure that any soy products you consume are organic.

In conclusion there are many ways to reduce your chances of breast cancer. I have presented the above from a more subtle point of view. When my wife (now ex-wife) developed a lesion in her left breast back in 1995 we put her on an organic vegan diet. Soon we cut out all sugar and increased her running mileage. She still has her left breast although there is still some skin retraction. My good friend and world class flamenco dancer Carmen Heredia died in her early forties from breast cancer and its treatment. Best not to get breast cancer at all.

Improving Awareness of Computer Forensics Services

Given the situation, there have been some attempts on the part of the government to spread awareness of computer crime, but not on a mass scale. It will be possible to spread awareness of computer forensics only after consciousness about computer crimes increase. The attempt should be two pronged to dissipate ignorance and to clear misconceptions. It is no point talking of what comes after the crime to people who do not even know what a crime is. This makes life much harder for computer forensics specialists, as they have to deal with clients who get the evidence tampered and covered without any idea of what they are doing. Online crimes have shaken the UK repeatedly during the past three years, but most home users still do not update their antiviruses. Very few companies have security measures in place, and in the lack of a comprehensive and forceful application of data protection laws, will probably continue being callous, bringing down a lot of misery on themselves and their clients.

Government Enterprise

Below is a list of government concerns that deal with computer crimes:

  • The local police force: According to the Home Office, all computer crimes should first be lodged with the local police force, who should be equipped either to deal with it, or pass it on to the appropriate higher authority.
  • SOCA: Serious and Organised Crime Agency is the body to which the former computer crime investigative wing, National High Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) now belongs.
  • CEOP: Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre tries to capture online child sexual exploiters and spread awareness among children. They even have an offline campaign.
  • CESG: Communications Electronics Security Group is in charge of IT and communications safety for UK government agencies, including the armed forces.
  • NISCC: National Infrastructure Security Coordination Centre works on risk reduction for and safe information sharing among government departments.
  • Others: The home office has a computer crime policy team and the DTI conducts the aforesaid survey; the cabinet has the Central Sponsor for Information Assurance who are running the public awareness campaigns like Get Safe Online, and IT safe.

Computer Forensics and Corporate Houses the Pros and Cons

With so many bodies to report to, how many of the computer crimes actually get reported every year by corporate houses? Unfortunately, we can see only the tip of the iceberg so far. Most companies are scared to report as they fear public backlash, media firing, client dispersal, and some gleeful comments from rival groups. Just like crime, justice too travels very fast on the internet, and the clients may come to know of the fiasco sooner than the company expects. This has happened to several gigantic concerns in the recent past, and it is hoped that all other companies would learn through their folly. Companies are scared about calling in data recovery professionals as they fear the safety of their data in the hands of the rescuers, and much the same reason is given when it comes to forensics experts too. One can always take the extra precaution of choosing a really reliable company and paying them well enough where high volumes of data have been compromised, and the trail is getting colder every second. It is the duty of a business house to locate and employ proper investigators when so many other peoples labours are at stake, and they have to find a way to do it.

Time to Take a Big Leap Toward Success, or Not?

In the field of personal growth and success there's a lot of talk about how important it is to take big leaps, get out of your comfort zone and stretch in order to create the life and business you most want.

I agree...there is a time and place for a big leap, AND there's a time when slow and steady wins the race.

If you're committed to improving your life and/or business there will come a time and place when the BIG LEAP stares you right in the face, daring you to take it. When that happens you'll be faced with a choice; leap now, or stay put.

That's what happened to me when I decided staying in my cushy corporate job wasn't for me anymore. I could have changed careers and found employment somewhere else but what I really wanted to do was start my own business. When I mustered the courage to admit my heart's desire I found myself at a fork in the road and had a choice to make: stick with the familiar or take the road less traveled.

I chose the road less traveled; in other words, I took the big leap.

Taking the leap I did set my life on a new trajectory. It's what I needed to do at that time in my life to honor the dreams I had for my life. Taking a familiar road would have resulted in "more of the same". BUT, my heart and soul didn't want more of the same, my heart and soul wanted different.

Once I got on a different path the actions I took changed. Instead of taking big leaps, the actions that took me to my next destination of choice were more of the slow and steady variety. With one big leap behind me, my life became more about consistent, focused action, rather than the "take leap after leap and hope my wings don't burnout before I land" variety.

Consistent and focused action, even in small increments, can be very powerful. Consistent and focused action will get you places...great places.

Don't underestimate the power of small steps.

So how do you know whether to take a big leap or stick with slow and steady?

Ask yourself, "What is the next best action I can take right now (to live the life I most want / build a successful business / heal my relationships / get healthy, etc.)?"

Then listen to your gut...it will tell you.

Strategies aside, your gut will keep you on course if you let it. Your gut (intuition, internal pace-setter extraordinaire) will nudge you to take risks, take time off, take a stand, get a divorce, get married, get out, spend money, save money, nap, exercise, balance your checkbook, attend a workshop, invest in your business, reevaluate your life, etc., etc.

Here's the thing: there's a lot of pressure out there to "take the big leap", but never do so because you think you should, do so because you know it's the right time to do so for you. If your gut is telling you to wait, then wait. If your gut is telling you to change your mind, change your mind. If your gut is telling you to go for it, then go for it.

Listen to your very wise inner voice. Trust what it has to say. (By the way, listening doesn't mean you have to DO.) Wait for a clear signal and until then, hold steady. Your big leap is coming and only you'll know when it's time.

Protection dog training - Frequently Asked Questions

Is a protection dog mean?

A well trained protection dog is social with everyone. A well trained protection dog does not interpret situations to show aggression, but rather waits for his owners command before using force.

Will a protection dog also be a watchdog and bark at everyone who comes to my door?

This depends on the training. A good trainer can develop a dogs natural tendencies to customize the training to your situation.

Is a protection dog good to live in the house?

Dogs trained for protection such as German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Rottweilers are very adaptable and are just as capable living in an apartment as they are on a ranch. Regardless of where they live they should get adequate exercise.

Will a protection dog be good with my kids?

Some dogs are better than others with kids. Work with a qualified trainer to make sure that your dog will be fine with your kids. It is also important to note that children should be taught proper dog etiquette and should be supervised when around any dog.

Will a protection dog bite someone without my command?

A well trained protection dog will bite only on command. Unfortunately, there are many dog trainers who do a sub-par training job with protection dogs. Make sure you are getting your protection dog from a reputable trainer

How much does a protection dog cost?

If you buy a trained dog the cost will vary greatly. Factors will be age of dog, titles the dog has earned, look of the dog, amount of training, etc. A young dog with basic training can be bought for a few thousand while a dog with working titles and extensive additional training may cost $20,000 and up.

I dont have any particular threats. Should I get a protection dog?

Many people that purchase protection dogs havent had break-ins or stalkers or previous violent attacks. They value the benefits of a great pet who would be able to handle a violent situation were it to ever arise. People that shouldnt get a protection dog are people that want to use them as an offensive weapon. These dogs should only be owned by responsible, mature people who want the dogs as a crime deterrent and last line of defense.

Are there specific laws that deal with protection dogs?

Yes. Certain cities require a special registration for protection dogs. Certain areas also have breed specific legislation which deals with restrictions for certain breeds. Check with your city and county offices for specific laws and ordinances.

Author Ty Brown is a renowned dog trainer whose training adventures and clients have taken him to 18 states and 5 countries to teach others how to properly train their dogs. Go to dogbehavioronline.com for more dog training articles, advice, tips, and answers from a professional dog trainer.

Podcasting: How To Receive and Make Your Own

Podcasts are a remarkable invention that allows you to directly receive audio broadcasts from anywhere in the world! Think of keeping a ham radio in your pocket with the easy to use aspects of Tivo. Wherever you are, you're never too far away for your personal mp3 player or computer to pick up your favorite podcast. This new form of broadcast combines the portability and popularity of Apple's famous iPod or any other mp3 play with the traditions of a traditional radio broadcast. Instead of attaching a radio scanner to pick up tired stations that play more commercials than songs, sign up for a podcast subscription. Similar to satellite radio, podcasts feature little to no commercials and programming that varies from music to talk to simulcasts, but also have a unique feature that satellite radio cannot compete. Just like a Tivo, you can pause, fast forward, or rewind the podcast to best fit around your schedule. If you want to catch your favorite show, simply pause the podcast until you decide to listen.

If you currently own an Apple iPod, or any other type of personal mp3 player, or a personal computer with podcasting capabilities, you can quickly and easily find and subscribe to podcasts. Before you can listen to a podcast, you must first have the correct RSS reading software. This software will enable the device to decode the files so they can be played correctly. Programs such as iPodderX are a popular choice for Apple users, as it is compatible with the interface. For PC users, iPodder.net is a great way to receive podcasts on your iPod or mp3 player. By simply connecting the device and subscribing to RSS feeds, this software will automatically download and adapt the podcast so you can listen at your leisure.

If you decide to create your own podcast, do not fear...the process is not nearly as difficult as it sounds. Use your computer, either a PC or a Mac, head phones, microphone, and some source of sound, whether it is a favorite cd, your personal band, or a great conversation, to create an audio file. Two useful programs many individuals choose to use are SoundFlower and SoundBed, both of which are free. Also, Line In is a great program that allows sound coming in from a microphone to be played. These programs allow you to quickly and easily convert your sound files into a podcast that can be played by you or anyone else who chooses to subscribe.

The Declaration of Skin-Dependence

The Want, Will and Hopes of Your Skin

We hold this truth to be self-evident your skin depends on you, but all skin is not created equal. Yours may be oily or dry, smooth or prone to breaking out, light or dark. Target your type with a comprehensive care plan focused on your skin type.

Your skin is endowed with certain unalienable rights. Among these are Life, your skin is very much alive, protect its natural beauty. Liberty, proper skin care allows you to be free, to enjoy life to the fullest, and to be passionate, because your skin looks fantastic. The Pursuit of Happiness, skin covers your entire body, keep it happy and you will be happy. Approximately, 16% of your total body weight is your skin. Respect all your skin, not just your face, and it will respect you. Keep your body stunning by using holistic, organic and homeopathic products which focus on specific problem areas of the body.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate you protect your skin. Experience has shown sunscreen saves your skin and saves lives. 90% of premature aging and skin cancers are caused by sun exposure. Every day protect yourself by applying a sunscreen based product with SPF 15 or higher, rain or shine. This will keep you and your skin healthy.

But when a long train of abuses occur through the aging process, it is your right; it is your duty, to use the proper skin care regimen to keep your skin in the healthiest condition possible for its age. When you age, your skin is the first place you show the signs of aging. Unfortunately, the aging process cannot be stopped, but using the right products can slow it down.

The history of our skin is a history of repeated problems. But these problems can be addressed. Stress, hormonal changes, lack of sleep, diet, sun exposure, new medications, and age can bring about stressed skin, causing anything from breakouts, dark circles, to changing texture and more. By using specific products to treat these areas, such as cheek gloss, your problems can be solved.

We must provide new guards to our skins future security. To do this, let these facts be submitted:

Beauty is more than skin deep. Healthy, glowing, and beautiful skin comes from within. A nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle results in radiant skin, shiny hair and strong nails. Supplements can fortify your body with essential nutrients attacking dryness, loss of elasticity and wrinkles giving your skincare routine a boost.
Instead of booking an expensive doctor appointment, make a daily appointment with your skin care cabinet. Many newer skin care products are loaded with the same potent ingredients used in the doctors office.
Choose the complexion products, such as cheek gloss, that work with your skin type. Even gorgeous skin needs extra help now and then. Maintaining healthy skin is just the beginning of the skincare process. Complexion products complete it, allowing you to produce an exquisite portrait.

We therefore publish and declare our commitment to a comprehensive skin care program. Our skin depends on us, and we will use specific products targeted to keep our skin in the healthiest condition possible. We will treat all aspects of our life: sleep, diet, exercise, stress management, and protection from the sun in a way to maximize the health of our skin.

For support of this declaration, and with a firm reliance on the protection and care of our skin, we mutually pledge our lives, our fortunes and our Sacred Honor.
